Not many CEOs can say they have helped to save someone’s life simply by doing their job, but that’s exactly what happened to Christine Lee. As the Managing Director of Medi-Life (M) Sdn Bhd, she certainly hasn’t had a dull career.
She has been in the healthcare industry for over 19 years, starting her career at a local supplier of medical and surgical products company for 8 years. And at one point, she even founded her own company, Medi-Life, distributor of high quality and state-of-the-art medical equipment and devices in hospitals in Malaysia for the past 11 years.
Medi-Life, a combination of passion and opportunity
The story of how Medi-Life was started could be interpreted as a combination of passion and opportunity. Towards the end of her 8 years serving at the former company, Christine was thrown into the deep end. The company decided to wind up due to some issues. But, it was also an opportunity for her to start something new. When an opportunity to set up Medi-Life presented itself, Christine Lee took up the challenge and ready to explore the journey.
“Medi-Life was started with only four of us; a salesperson, a service engineer, an administrator and myself. We had only one agency line to start with. Later in 2009, when my former company wind up, we acquired some of the agency lines to continue supplying the products in the market and at the same time ensuring the job continuity for the people who have been in the former company,” adding that her former managing director has been supportive in encouraging her to do it.
It’s more than selling healthcare equipment
“As a distributor, we see ourselves as the partner to the healthcare provider. Our job is not about selling, we need to be knowledgeable about the application of each product as we are dealing with people’s lives. About 80 to 90 per cent of the products that we supply are catered for operating theatre, so there’s no room for us to make a mistake. Our job is to ensure the equipment functioning well during the surgical procedure.”
When quality healthcare matters
The Medi-Life team is made up of professional passionate people who are all determined to improve peoples’ lives. With this mindset, every day, they transform lives by ensuring the after-sale service goes well; all with the intention of helping patients get the best treatment. It is not a simple task, but it’s made easier by leveraging the frontline of the team.
“The salesperson and engineers of Medi-Life (M) Sdn Bhd are playing a big role in ensuring the after-sale service goes well. They need to be well-versed and willing to sacrifice their personal time. The jobs are demanding as at time they have to work throughout the weekends. So, whenever necessary, we have to be there to ensure the equipment functioning well. We need to help the doctors and nurses to get familiar with the equipment.”
“As much as I recognize the importance of education qualifications, I believe great attitude such as willingness to work, learn, and improve is the key to success not only in medical but every field.”
Under Christine’s leadership, she trains every newly hired to improve their credibility by memorising a “medical bible” which comprising anatomy, physiology, surgical terminology and surgical procedures and sit for an exam, At Medi-Life, they take this very seriously as the employees need to have the necessary knowledge to serve the customers well.
Expanding the company
With their tagline, “When Quality Healthcare Matters”, Medi-Life never compromise on serving the best quality of the products. In a stern tone, Christine expressed her principle, “As much as I recognize cost-cutting is necessary, product quality is always our No 1 deciding factor on top of everything else. We will study the products carefully before we promote them to our customers.” adding that Medi-Life has been awarded the best solution in the healthcare industry by The Brand Laureate in 2018 and Outstanding Entrepreneur in the Medical Supplies Industry in 2018 by APEA that she received in 2018.
With business thriving, Medi-Life began its steady growth, opening three branches in Sabah, Sarawak and Penang, and achieving revenue growth of 250% for 9 years. Today, the agency line has increased to 26 in total and the team have expanded to 70 people.
The future of Medi-Life
She tells WargaBiz that the global healthcare industry is going through a transformative period marked by diverging trends. While new technology is advancing, they need to prepare themselves with the emerging trends. Amind the rapidly evolving environment, Christine is confident that Medi-Life will continue to keep up with the changing needs of the healthcare industry.
“To improve our portfolio, we are looking to setting up our branch in Johor and expanding to Singapore; that’s our 3-year plan. Our goal is to uphold the Medi-Life legacy by doing our best work to improve the healthcare field and every day, we are getting closer to that goal,” she ends.
