After months of progress, Santan by AirAsia has finally opened to the public in December 2019. The new restaurant has an unusual concept, features a menu filled with some AirAsia’s inflight hot sellers including the famous Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak and Uncle Chin’s Chicken Rice.
The very first AirAsia restaurant, named after Malaysia’s coconut milk, Santan
Situated on the first floor of the Mid Valley Megamall, Santan and T&CO aim to reflect on purity and simplicity of ASEAN’s flavours. Santan Restaurant and T&CO Cafe general manager Catherine Goh said they have seen a significant appetite for AirAsia inflight menu offerings beyond their flights across the region and this is their answer to that demand.
“We are very proud to extend what started out as an inflight menu into new markets and reiterate our support for local and Asean producers and suppliers, apart from creating new job opportunities with affordable franchising,” she said.
A meal and drink at the restaurant cost RM15
The prices are considerably affordable, ranging from RM12 to RM15 for a beverage and meal combo. The menu so far includes dishes such as Pak Nasser’s nasi lemak, nasi padang beef rendang, nyonya curry laksa, fried chicken with nam prik and chicken satay with peanut sauce.
Taking up only 30% of the menu, other dishes available are created by five chefs and culinary art students. With the same concept as the flight menu, the dishes are served in brown boxes, beautifully wrapped with “From ASEAN With Love” paper band.
Customers can pre-order online at the website or mobile app
Besides allowing customers to pre-order online at their website and the T&CO mobile app before collecting their orders at the outlet, the restaurant also features a smart menu based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. While AirAsia meals are currently not yet available on food delivery apps, according to Tony Fernandes, plans were underway to make this happen.
AirAsia aims to have five Santan-owned restaurants by the end of 2020
They are aiming to have five Santan-owned restaurants by the end of 2020, and 100 franchise-operated restaurants and cafes within the next three to five years, with expansions in global markets. A franchise will also be opened in China soon.
Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said the airline has plans to open its fast food restaurant in global culinary hotspots such as London and New York, besides other Asean countries.
